Be Not Conformed

Do not Conform to this world

Conformity may occur for various reasons, such as wanting to be accepted by certain people or groups. It is a desire to feel like you belong. It is an act of going along with social norms and expectations.

Conformity is the tendency to adjust one’s behavior or beliefs to match those of a group. It is a process whereby people change their beliefs, attitudes, actions, or perceptions to match that group.

Romans 12:2

Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.

There is a call to be transformed by the renewing of the mind. It is not to change your mind but to transform. Transformation involves completely changing the characteristics or appearance of something or someone.

Personal transformation is the process of changing aspects of who we are, what we do, and the life we lead.

Christians are called to be “not conformed to this world,” a behavior and customs that are usually selfish and often corrupting. Our refusal to conform to this world’s values must go deeper than the level of behavior and customs; it must be firmly founded in our minds. Because it is possible to avoid most worldly customs while still being proud.

Covetous- the desire to want something that belongs to another.

Selfishness- lacking consideration for others, concerned only about one’s profits and pleasure, stubborn, and arrogant. Only when the Holy Spirit renews and redirects our minds are we truly transformed.

The word tells us we have a choice. We can allow ourselves to be dominated by the flesh, which is why we have a sinful nature. But be mindful that the wages of sin are death. Or we can allow ourselves to be dominated by the Holy Spirit, which is why we want to follow Jesus, and center our lives on God because His way brings life and peace.

When we surrender our will and lives to Him, the Holy Spirit comes to live in us. It is God who transforms us to be more like Christ. So, we no longer wish to “Conform to the pattern of this world” but are “transformed by the renewing of our minds.”
